The Tamperproof Screw Myth

Tamperproof screws are not as tamper proof as people think. Most styles are vandal proof only. The reason is that security screw bits have become easily obtainable, and there are tens-of-thousands in circulation.

Security screws have been in existence for 50 years and most are without patent protection. "Tamperproof" bits are being manufactured, imported, and widely distributed, without restraint. The following are sources:

The 20000 outlets for tamperproof bits include bolt and nut distributors, True Value® hardware stores, NAPA® stores, independent tool companies and the internet. There are over 200000 catalogues in circulation (McMaster-Carr, Grainger, Sears, and Stanley) marketing security bits. One can easily buy tamper proof bits. With these bits so easily obtainable, it has made Torx¨-pin, Hex-pin, Phillips¨-pin, Spanner, Triwing¨, Tri-Groove, and One-Way screws "vandal proof" only. "Tamperproof screws" is a myth.
